Rising electricity costs in 2025: operational energy management can help

Rising levies

The transmission system operators recently announced that the levies for electricity will increase by around 68% from 2025. For consumers, this means an increase in the price of electricity of around 1 ct/kWh. The majority of the increase is due to the levy in accordance with Section 19 StromNEV. This increase is mainly due to the rollover amount to compensate for distribution grid costs resulting from the integration of renewable energies.

Rising grid fees

Furthermore, an increase in average transmission grid fees of 3.4 % was announced. It should be noted that the actual grid fee due is only partly influenced by the transmission grid fee. Another factor is the cost of the distribution grid. Their development varies from region to region, as a distribution mechanism is being introduced due to the integration of renewable generation. Areas in northern and north-eastern Germany in particular will benefit from this due to large wind power capacities.

What does this mean in concrete terms? - A practical example

A company from Munich has an annual consumption of 2 GWh.

  • As the surcharges for the first GWh will increase by around 1 ct/kWh in 2025, the additional costs for energy consumption will be around €10,000. (The analysis does not take into account the end consumer category B, i.e. the levies that are applied above 1 GWh)
  • At Stadtwerke München, the grid fee will increase by 0.2 ct/kWh in 2025. This results in additional costs for energy consumption of €4,000.
  • Finally, the annual performance price at SW München in medium voltage will increase from € 153.88 kW/a (2024) to € 175.12 kW/a (2025). For a company with an annual output of 600 kW, this means additional costs of €12,744 for the use of power.

De facto, the company must expect additional costs of around €26,744 in the coming year due to the price increases.

What can you do?

Although neither the amount of the levies nor the amount of the grid charges can be influenced by the consumer, the introduction of an energy management system and the use of smart metering technology can lead to electricity savings and thus to a reduction in electricity costs. This is where we come in:

econ4 software

With the help of our econ4 software, you can efficiently monitor and optimize your energy consumption. The analysis of consumption data makes it possible

  • identify inefficient usage patterns,
  • implement targeted measures to reduce energy consumption,
  • optimize your energy efficiency and thus reduce your energy costs.

econ peak load management

One reason for high electricity costs are so-called load peaks - short-term, high power demands in the electricity grid. The higher the peak loads, the higher the grid charges. With our econ peak load management, you can control these peaks efficiently and thus reduce your energy costs. The powerful econ peak plug & play controller adapts to your individual needs, can be expanded at any time and can be seamlessly integrated into existing energy management systems. This means that you can not only avoid peak loads, but also optimize your own consumption.

Incidentally, the investment costs for our products are fully amortized after just one year thanks to the cost savings achieved.
